These boats are designed to stand up to the rigors of North East Lobster fishing. These boats are unbeatable in a head sea and are extremely stable when adrift. The performance comes from a design that utilizes the best part of a v-hull design and the speed of a planing hull. These boats are made by a variety of manufacturers, each with unique design features.  Due to the legendary performance many of these hulls are now being finished into sport fishing, yachts and dive boats. In fact when I upgraded from a small run about to a commercial charter boat it was the Downeast style hull that I picked. For the past 10 years I have been able to run in all sorts of conditions that would not of previously have been possible. In fact the boat can handle more than my customers can and at times more than I can. I would highly recommend a down east style boat to anyone that wants to fish or cruise offshore.
