Marine Radar
By Capt. Daniel Berg

Marine radar units have come along way in recent years. Now these units are easier to use, more compact and most importunately more affordable. Anyone that has ever operated a marine vessel in the fog knows how valuable a radar can be. When I was a kid, about 12 years old. A few friends and I headed offshore to go fishing. It was a beautiful day with flat calm seas. We ran about four miles out to the #4 bell buoy. We fished all day long catching our limit of bluefish as well as assorted black fish and sea bass. Early afternoon we decided to head home. I looked around and noticed a light fog surrounding the boat. We could see a couple hundred feet but could no longer see shore. Being the youngest aboard I asked everyone which way shore was. To my surprise everyone pointed in a different direction! Now we were in trouble. Although, it was the not the direction I had picked we decided to run the way my friend Jimmy was pointing. After about ten minutes I decided that this was s stupid move. I turned the boat around 180 degrees ran for another 10 minutes then shut down the engine and listened for the bell on buoy #4. We made out way back to the buoy. I figured it was better to wait it out here rather than head off in an unknown direction. To make a long story short the fog eventually lifted and we made it back to shore. Just a bunch of stupid kids out fishing. I learned from that experience never to venture offshore without at least a  radio & compass. Now 35 years later I would not head offshore without the security of a Marine Radar. There is just no reason to take a chance.

Within these web pages you will find links to a variety of popular marine radar manufacturers and distributors. The units range in price, design and features. Find one that fits your needs then spend some time learning how to use it. Do not wait for the fog to roll in. Spend a day playing around in the bay to get use to the controls. Buying a marine radar is money well spent!

Nothing beats radar for guiding your boat through the darkest night or the thickest fog. Radar enables you to plot a fix from just a single buoy or landmark, and it is the only navigation tool that tells you not just where you are, but who else or what else is out there with you. Today’s smaller, affordable, more powerful radars make more sense than ever for sailors and powerboaters.

This complete, in-depth manual shows you how to:

  • Choose the best radar model for your sail- or powerboat
  • Install, adjust, and operate your system
  • Interpret the images on your radar screen
  • Pilot your boat and track the movements of vessels around you
  • Use radar to track and avoid squalls, to outmaneuver competitors in a yacht race, and for other specialized tasks
  • Interface your radar with a digital compass, GPS, or electronic chart

Radar for Mariners comes with a Radar Resources CD-ROM that includes a “field guide” to screen and target images, plotting sheets for printing, an e-book copy of the complete Navigation Rules, sample radar manuals, and more. It also includes a free trial version (30-day period) of the Starpath Radar Trainer simulator, plus an encrypted copy of the Full Radar Trainer you can purchase at a discount nearly equal to the price of this book! (See the enclosed CD-ROM for details.)

Praise for David Burch’s Emergency Navigation:

"A standout from the otherwise faceless navigation texts that pass through our offices. Anyone venturing offshore should read this book thoroughly."—Yachting

Praise for David Burch’s Radar Trainer navigation program:

"The Starpath Radar Trainer course is excellent! It is comprehensive and thorough . . . I would not hesitate to recommend it. . . . Any skipper can profit by using this course."—Elbert S. "Mack" Maloney, author of Chapman Piloting & Seamanship
